Oncology – Cancer Treatment

Cancer – Fast Facts 1. Each year, more than 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer. 2. There are over 200 known types of cancer, including subtypes. 3. Only 5 to 10% of cancers develop solely as the result of an inherited genetic mutation (an inherited gene), without any environmental influence.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by an abnormal growth of cells or cells that do not stop dividing and duplicating. Every day, our cells grow and divide in order to form new cells. These new cells replace damaged ones that will eventually die. With cancer, damaged cells do not die and, at the same time, the uncontrollable growth of new cells forms a mass called a tumor.

How is Cancer Treated at a Specialty Pharmacy?

Cancer treatment will vary depending on the type of cancer diagnosed as well as other factors including genetic characteristics of the cancer, the stage of cancer, the age of the patient, and the severity of symptoms. Cancer treatments are moving away from general treatment plans to more personalized, targeted therapies that focus on the needs of each individual. The goal of cancer treatment is to eliminate all cancer cells and cure the patient of the disease. Treatments for cancer may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, surgery, and sometimes a combination of two or more of these therapies.

Why Is it Important to Adhere to Cancer Treatment?

If not treated properly, or if left untreated, cancer may lead to health complications, such as metastasis of the cancer (cancer that spreads to other locations in the body) or even death.
